Please join us for the opening reception of Alex Johnmeyer’s solo art exhibition, “Unboxed” on March 7th, from 5-8 pm at the Angad Arts Hotel, curated by Vaness Rudloff. This is a free, all ages event & open to the public. Work will remain on view until May 31st.
In his new body of work, Alex Johnmeyer reflects on his journey as a transgender and queer man, using his childhood in the 1980s and 1990s as a lens to explore themes of LGBTQIA2S+ visibility and experience. Through a series of vibrant paintings, he captures fragmented memories of a past shaped by pop culture, evolving gender norms, and the quiet challenges of growing up feeling different.
Alex’s use of bold color palettes and textured layers, inspired by the toys of his youth, serves as a stepping stone to deeper reflections on gender, societal expectations, and the fluidity of self-expression. By transforming the familiar into the poignant, his work encourages a deeper understanding of the fluid and evolving nature of self, prompting a conversation about how identity is continuously redefined and reclaimed.
There will be two opportunities to attend a “Curated Cocktails Artist Talk” with Alex, hosted by the Angad Arts Hotel, on March 10th and May 12th from 6-8 pm. Tickets cost $15, and includes a Curated Cocktail, walking tour of all the art spaces in the hotel, and a chance to hear more about the stories, symbolism & techniques behind the creation of the works in “Unboxed.”
