As part of Elysian Gallery's "Beyond the Rainbow" exhibition, which is on view through September 20th, I will be giving an Artist Talk & Free Texture Class on September 18th from 6:30- 8:30 pm. More information is in the events tab.

Join us for an inspiring Artist Talk and FREE Hands-On Texture Class with Alex Johnmeyer on Friday, September 18th, from 6:30–8:30 PM at Elysian Gallery & Cafe located at 419 E Broadway, Alton, IL 62002. Free & Open to the Public, Ages 18+

This special evening offers a behind-the-scenes look at Alex’s journey as a professional artist, followed by an opportunity to get creative and experiment with texture techniques in your own artwork.

Outside food is welcome, and the café will have plenty of non‑alcoholic drinks available — coffee, teas, sodas, and more.

ARTIST TALK, 6:30–7:30 PM 🎨
Alex will share his 17-year journey as a professional artist, discussing how he discovered his artistic voice and how his work has evolved throughout his career. He’ll explore the creative and technical processes behind his paintings, the importance of authenticity in his practice, and the experiences that have shaped his career. Alex will also discuss how his lived experience as a queer and transgender man has influenced both his artwork and his path as a professional artist.

FREE HANDS ON TEXTURE CLASS, 7:30–8:30 PM
Following the artist talk, Alex will lead a one-hour, hands-on class focused on incorporating texture into your paintings. Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with air-dry clay, tools, and a variety of textural techniques that can be incorporated into their own creative practice.
Bring a notebook and be ready to take lots of notes! Participants may choose to leave their wet clay pieces at Elysian Gallery to pick them up a few days later, or take their pieces home with them that evening.

This Saturday night, I am so excited to have three original pieces as part of Elysian Gallery’s “Beyond the Rainbow,” juried by Quynn Douglas Dale, and featuring works by over 40 LGBTQ+ artists. There will be live music by Ahna all night long from 6-9 pm!

I got most of the work done sculpting my first banana with air dry clay this week. It measures 16 inches long by 2 inches tall off the the surface of the wood panel. I’m SO PROUD… I’m having so much FUN working with new materials & techniques. Next week I will start on banana #2. Perhaps I need to name them? BANANA SKELETON 🍌💀

I built my wire armature & attached the mesh yesterday! I’ve never done anything like this before, but am truly enjoying LEARNING so many new things this year! These bananas are SECURED!

I feel that creating a supportive internal structure will enable my sculptural paintings to go to the NEXT LEVEL!

Next I will be putting about an inch of clay on all sides of the wire mesh, and the wire should help prevent the issue I was having with the weight of the clay making it sag as it dried.

IT HAS BEGUN! I’ve started working on my next sculptural painting… and it’s a commission!

I was at an exhibition a few months ago, and was talking with a gentleman I’ve known for a while now named John, and he asked what my next painting is going to be. So I showed him the photo I took… I call it “Sad Bananas.”

The bananas are a gay couple in love… one banana is always too warm, the other likes to sleep under a big comforter… or perhaps they are having an argument and one banana stole all the blankets… or perhaps they have their backs turned to one another because SOMEONE snores… lol 😂

The man laughed and said, “I need this. I’m buying that.”

I was so surprised, “Are you serious?!” I did not think anyone would WANT my sad bananas. They’ve been living rent free in my mind for so long.

I got the wood panel gessoed and the sketches done a few weeks ago, but the last few weeks have been so busy (but all in the most wonderful ways). Now I finally have time to start BUILDING.

I’m having a lot of fun, learning how to build a wire armature and securing it to the panel. The bananas will measure 16 inches long by 3 inches tall off the panel. BANANA MATH. I’m learning a LOT.

Sometimes you gotta break shit and start over, and that’s what progress looks like. Special thanks to Jared Minnick for chatting with me about using threaded eyelet bolts. 💜😍

Thank you to EVERYONE who came to my Artist Talk at ArtFusion on Friday evening. It meant so much to me to see so many friendly faces in the crowd.

I brought 8 different paintings (in oil, watercolor, acrylic & texture media) that represented my journey not only in life, but also the evolution of my artwork.

I may not be the most eloquent public speaker, but I was most certainly AUTHENTIC to who I am (for better or worse).

My newest, original sculptural painting, “Morning Respite” is ready for art drop off TODAY!!! I’m SO PROUD of how this one turned out.

The air-dry clay donut stands two inches tall, with each sprinkle individually shaped and finished with acrylic paint. The comics were painted with watercolor and colored pencil, while the mug, saucer, and spoon were painted in oils. 😂

Come see it in person at the Duane Reed Gallery Small Works Invitational on July 24, 5-8 pm in the STL Central West End. There will be works by over 70 artists!

I finished the comic background & can now start working on the mug, saucer & spoon in oils! I think I did a pretty good job on the comics? This is the first time I layered colored pencils on top of my watercolors for more details. Thank you to @strobel_sketches & @joanmarieart for giving me the confidence to try them out!
